Is the Center a fee-for-service or core facility?
No. The Whitehead MIT BioImaging Center is a technology-development center that acts a resource for the greater MIT community. We offer advice and training to scientists who wish to conduct image-based research. Where appropriate, we may facilitate collaborations between scientists whose imaging needs cannot be fulfilled using instruments available at core facilities on campus.
What computational resources are available for image-processing and analysis?
The Center has state-of-the-art computational resources. Requirements for data storage and management as well as processing, visualization and analysis can be addressed, please contact us for up-to-date information.
Which academic departments are associated with the Center?
Faculty in the Center represent a variety of MIT academic departments including Biology, Biological Engineering, Chemistry and Mechanical Engineering. In addition to our founding with the Whitehead Institute, we also have close ties with the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and the Computational and Systems Biology Initiative (CSBi) at MIT.
What is the relationship between the Center and industry?
Since the Center is primarily technology development driven, we work with manufacturers of molecular biology reagents, imaging instruments, and computational hardware and software to develop new reagents, to specify the requirements for new designs of hardware and software, to beta-test prototypes, and to characterize new applications. We are also forming collaborations with biotech and pharma companies interested in applying high content analysis to drug discovery.
